Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: FAQ

What is Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy addresses personal difficulties. It allows an individual, family, or couple, to talk openly and confidentiality in a safe and respectful environment. Their concerns and feelings are discussed with a trained professional. Psychotherapy involves developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating and creating dialogue, and working to overcome problematic thoughts, feelings or behaviors. Psychotherapy aims to increase an individual's sense of wellbeing and relationships.

How does therapy help?

Participating in psychotherapy or psychological services can bring a fresh perspective to an ongoing problem and point you in the direction of a new solution. Often clients can resolve the impact of past hurts and abuses. The benefits you obtain will depend on how well you use the process and what you learn. Therapy can also help you discover new ways to cope with stress and anxiety and improve your self esteem and boost self- confidence.

What is the difference between counselling and therapy?

Counseling refers to taking a short-term problem focused approach toward solving a client’s concerns, whereas, psychotherapy is often more in depth, including exploring underlying issues. Both counseling and psychotherapy involve conversations designed to facilitate personal growth, improve communication and promote healthy relationships.

Is therapy confidential?

In general the law protects the confidentiality of all conversations between a client and a psychotherapist. I do not disclose information without your written permission. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule, such as:

  • A therapist must report suspected child abuse to the appropriate authorities

  • If a client suggests intent to harm him or herself, a therapist will make every effort to enlist your cooperation to ensure your safety. If you do not cooperate, further measures may be taken without your permission to ensure safety.

  • If a client is threatening bodily harm to another person, a therapist must notify the police and the intended victim.

What are your rates and does insurance cover visits?

My rate is $130+HST dollars per clinical hour for Individual therapy. Reduced fee services are available on a limited basis.

Depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for psychotherapy services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider directly, as services depend on your employer’s plan and not which insurance company it is. If you do not see psychotherapy services covered on your plan, you can always request it from your employer/plan administrator.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you do not show up for your appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be expected to pay for the cost of the missed session. The fee for services is waived if you need to cancel due to an emergency.

What can I expect in a therapy session?

During sessions, we will be talking about the primary concerns and issues in your life. Each session is 50 minutes long. Some people request longer sessions and this can be arranged. In your first session, we will talk about the nature of your concerns, how they affect you and what your hopes are for the therapy process. Between sessions it is useful to reflect on our discussions. At times we may agree that you will take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, or read a book. Therapy works best when you are an active participant both in and outside of the therapy sessions
